The original research that established the principles of automated network configuration. This work introduced the Whiteboard-Plan-Build transformation model, allowing engineers to work with high-level design abstractions while the system handles implementation details.

Research Contribution

• Abstractions: identified the fundamental primitives for representing network intent independently of vendor syntax
• Transformations: developed graph-based algorithms to automatically calculate IP addresses, OSPF areas, and BGP peerings
• Scalability: verified that automated generation handles core-network topologies with hundreds of devices in seconds
• Industry adoption: earlier iterations were integrated into industry tooling for automated lab provisioning
